Things Not to Say to Someone in a Health Crisis

things-not-to-say-to-someone-in-a-health-crisis

The words we use to communicate with one another and how we understand them have meaning. So, when communicating with persons who have an acute health condition, it is critical to consider what to communicate and, more crucially, what NOT to say to a loved one in distress.

While we are all well-meaning, some things are better left unsaid. When speaking with people who are experiencing a health crisis, avoid using the following phrases:

  • “My brother got the same medical diagnosis and was ill for months.” Telling negative anecdotes about someone who has the same medical diagnosis is a proven way to lower the person’s spirits. As an alternative, remember that everyone experiences health difficulties differently, and focus on the positives the person you’re speaking with has accomplished.
  • “If you’d only stopped smoking (or exercised; or followed a good eating plan, etc.), this could not have occurred.” It’s impossible to tell whether the outcome would have been different if healthier choices had been taken, and there’s no point in speculating. Instead, focus on providing the help and empathy that the individual requires right now and leave any feelings of judgment at the door.
