Ask Us: What Is a Heart-Healthy Diet?

ask-us-what-is-a-heart-healthy-diet

Our senior loved ones have a greater risk of developing cardiovascular diseases than younger people. This is because, as we age, our cardiovascular system, particularly our heart and blood vessels, ages as well. Plaque also begins to develop and build up in their coronary arteries such that blood flow to their heart becomes limited.

This is where a heart-healthy diet comes in. Along with proper exercise, consistent hygiene and personal care routine, and go-to ways to relax and de-stress, this diet can help prevent further damage and minimize the effects of aging.

So, what is a heart-healthy diet, and what does it look like?

A heart-healthy diet is simply a diet that is ideal for your heart and your cardiovascular system.

As a provider of meal preparation along with other home care services at A Caring Hand Home Care, Inc., here are some pointers to follow:

  • No more than six ounces of cooked lean meat, poultry, fish, or seafood a day
  • Reduction of sodium intake to less than 2,400 milligrams (mg) a day
  • Two to three servings of fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt, or cheese every day
  • Maximum of six to eight servings of fat and oils every day
  • Three servings of vegetables or whole grain food items a day

Since these can be complex to follow, we suggest enlisting a provider of home care in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, like our own, to incorporate these into their diet.

We also provide companionship in Pennsylvania for your convenience. Get in touch with us!
